Who We Are

Mission & History

In March of 2019, South Central Area Recovery (SCAR).  There was a lack of coordination and a shortage of recovery meetings in our community.  Additionally, many meetings are held in locations that are not handicap accessible.  The solution was a facility dedicated to use by 12-step support groups, other recovery groups and provide office space for independent counseling services focused on recovery and mental health issues.  Many of the board members have personal experience with recovery, so we’re acutely aware of the needs in our community and uniquely suited to the task of providing this service.

Twelve Step programs provide a process for people struggling with various addictions and provide critical support for those seeking recovery by allowing others, who have found recovery, to pass on knowledge and extend a helping hand. Meaningful, long-term recovery is associated with consistent involvement with Twelve-Step support groups.  Twelve-Step programs are non-political, non-religious and non-commercial.

SCAR purchased property located at 307 East Ave., in downtown Holdrege, formerly the Corner Nugget retail building. Off-street parking is available for the privacy of individuals attending meetings.   The building was completely remodeled using grant funding and donations.  The Phelps County Community Foundation, Phelps County Community Development and Phelps Memorial Hospital Foundation were instrumental in remodeling, furnishing and making the facility handicap accessible.

The building is has nearly 6,000 sq. ft., with six meeting rooms, three offices, kitchen, storage and ADA bathrooms.  SCAR hosts meetings every day of the week with multiple meetings on some days.  Baily Dahlgren, a licensed counselor uses one of the counseling offices.  Women, Infant Children (WIC) uses the facility multiple times a month to meet with clients and Back Pack Blessings uses the facility to store and pack lunches for school children. Other organizations use the facility too.
